Mela Muter met Raymond Lefebvre in 1917 and maintained an intimate relationship with him until his death in 1920. He disappeared while on delegation to the Third International in Moscow. There are a few unfinished portraits of Muter from the same period: Portrait d'Ambroise Vollard and Stefan Zeromski.
