LORIS (Fabien) - PARRY (Roger) - FARGUE (Léon-Paul).
Banality.
Paris: Nouvelle Revue Française, [1930]. -In-folio, 387x280: frontispiece, 79 pp. (3 ff. last blank), 15 plates, printed cover. Paperback, lined cover.

First illustrated edition, published on the initiative of André Malraux. It is adorned with 16 "réogrammes et recherches d'objets" by actor and illustrator Fabien LORIS (1906-1979) and photographer Roger PARRY (1905-1977).
This is one of the finest publishing successes of the interwar period, and one of the very first literary publications illustrated with artistic photographs.
This is Roger Parry's main work, which earned him recognition from his peers. He offers a personal, visual interpretation of Fargue's poems, using a variety of techniques such as multiple exposure, photomontage, solarization and negative printing, creating a first-rate avant-garde work. In addition, several compositions by draughtsman Fabien Loris are reproduced in photography, all printed in heliogravure.
"The exceptional character of Banalité, apart from its intrinsic qualities, is that it is the first bridge to be built between the large illustrated book and photographic experimentation, two territories where modernity is invented" (Christophe Berthoud, Jeu de Paume Catalogue, 2007).
One of 332 numbered copies on Pannekoek Hollande paper.
A very well preserved copy.
