PICABIA (Francis).
391. Superrealism.
Paris, May 1924. - 2 folio pages.

Sole issue no. 16 of May 1924 of this famous Dada magazine published under the sole responsibility of Francis Picabia. The complete collection comprises 19 issues published irregularly in Barcelona, New York, Zurich or Paris from January 1917 to November 1924.
This issue is rare; entirely written and illustrated by Picabia, it is directed against André Breton and consists of 5 drawings and 3 texts, entitled Hypertrophie poétique, Tabac and Hyperpoésie trophique, signed under the pseudonym Cattawi-Menasse.
This issue and the following 3 marked a turning point in the magazine's history, as explained by Michel Sanouillet in the 1976 reprint of the magazine by Belfond and Losfeld: "These issues (16 to 19) can only be understood in terms of the literary conjuncture. Since the end of 1923, André Breton on the one hand, and Paul Dermée and Ivan Goll on the other, had been vying for exclusive use of the name "Surréalisme", inherited from Apollinaire, to which each attached very different meanings. Picabia, asked to lend his support by both sides, hesitated. He had already been following Breton's efforts to find a positive solution to Dadaism for many months, and was irritated by the director of Littérature's flirtation with the NRF, especially as Gallimard had rejected Picabia's request to publish his latest articles in volume form on rue Sébastien-Bottin. So, in May 1924, he took up his pen again and commissioned De Massot to prepare six issues - there would in fact be only four - of 391. Once again, the format changed, as did the layout: little text, many drawings, and the latter in a new style, the whole constituting a violent satire aimed at undermining surrealism in general and Breton's in particular, which was already being accused of pontificating".
A well-preserved copy, with the usual folds and bearing on the top of the first page a largely torn-off stamp topped by a postmark dated May 1924.
