TOMPSON (David). -2 parts in one volume in-8, 156x96: VI pp., (1 f.), 158 pp.; (2 ff.), 138 pp., (1 f. blank). Marbled calf, cold fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding). The only edition of this anonymous philosophical utopia, published under the pseudonym of David Tompson. The work was placed on the index in 1762, mainly because of its deist and libertarian leanings, as summarized in the last paragraph of the book: "Telle est l'Histoire d'un Peuple, qui fait consister son bonheur à n'avoir ni Rois qui les gouvernent, ni Prêtres qui les dirigent, ni Controversistes qui combattent leurs opinions, ni Interprêtes qui leur expliquent leurs dogmes." (Such is the History of a People, whose happiness consists in having neither Kings to govern them, nor Priests to direct them, nor Controversialists to combat their opinions, nor Interpreters to explain their dogmas to them. A fine copy in contemporary binding. One corner slightly dulled. A few scattered brown spots.
