Perhinderion A lot comprising 4 reproductions of woodcuts by Dürer that appeared in the magazine, including one that appeared in the 2nd issue, dedicated in pen and ink in the upper margin by A. Jarry to the printer: "Exemplaire offert à M. Ch. Renaudie / Alfred Jarry". Proofs on thin buff vellum or ivory laid paper. Edge damage to one plate, mounted under passe-partout. Joint: Le Chemin de fer, imagerie d'Épinal published in the 2nd issue, very damaged; 8 sheets of defets of text or covers (the latter two on parchment). Ens. 13 p. The short-lived magazine Perhinderion was founded by Alfred Jarry after the defection of Rémy de Gourmont, with whom he had previously edited L'Ymagier. It had just two issues, in March and June 1896. "Perhinderion" is a Breton word meaning "pardon" in the sense of "pilgrimage", and for Jarry it also evokes the "first sound of mass". Alfred Jarry invested in special typefaces for this new magazine. The two issues featured reproductions of old woodcuts, popular imagery (Pellerin in Épinal) and contemporary creations such as Émile Bernard's lithographed and colored images of piety, in keeping with the great tradition of popular imagery disseminated by peddlers. (See nos. 82 to 104).
