Sydney Curnow Vosper (English, 1866-1942) Woman carrying a bucket in front of a thatched cottage. Circa 1910. Etching. 86 x 111. Fine impression on laid paper, dedicated in pen and sepia ink: "à Mlle Philomène Le Du avec les meilleurs souhaits" and signed. Scattered light foxing. Full margins. Stamp R. T. This print was featured in the following exhibitions: Cent ans d'estampes en Bretagne, Le Faouët, 1998; Before and After Gauguin, Atlanta, 2008. Born in English Cornwall, near Plymouth, Curnow Vosper met his wife Constance James, descendant of a Welsh nobleman, in Brittany. "...the man himself was better known in Brittany, where he was one of the many artists who stayed and worked in Le Faouët [...] He also spent time in Le Pouldu, the village where Gauguin went when he left Pont-Aven, which had become too popular for his taste. In fact, Vosper spent decades in Brittany, and some of his most notable works were painted there. We know that he had learned to speak Breton [...] It is in Brittany, more than anywhere else, that we see the attentive naturalism of works that are veritable ethnological documents."
