Armand Seguin (1869-1903) Le Soir, or La Glaneuse. 1894. Etching. 227 x 230. Field, Strauss and Wagstaff 68; Stein and Karshan 79. Printed in bistre brown. Fine proof on cream laid paper, numbered "1" and signed in pencil. Marginal oxidation. Light foxing. Full margins. Edition of 100 proofs. Dry stamp: L'Estampe originale (Lugt 819). Stamp R. T. This print was featured in the exhibition Before and after Gauguin, Atlanta, 2008. "... the landscape engraved by Séguin can be found in a painting by Paul Gauguin, Ferme en Bretagne, which Wildenstein dated 1889 and which, according to Richard Field, can only be from 1894. But Séguin's etching, more decorative, is of a different conception: it is less concerned with organizing space and depicting detail: as Gauguin wrote in his preface to the 1895 exhibition catalog, Séguin 'expresses not what he sees but what he thinks through an original harmony of lines.'" (M. Grivel, ed., Gauguin et l'École de Pont-Aven, exhibition catalog, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, 1989, p. 95).
