Roderic O'Conor (Irish, 1860-1940)
Sun Effect in a Cloud. 1893. Etching. 335 x 260. Johnston 18. A perfect proof on white vellum, from an edition of 30 proofs made by H. Galland in 1981, numbered and annotated in pencil. Full margins. Stamp R. T. (front and back).

"In Effet de Soleil dans un nuage, the landscape elements in the background are broken down into "bands" or parallel lines. As we've already noted, it's probably Van Gogh's influence that is perceptible here. O'Conor's strokes, however, are longer, and the overall effect is not as eventful. The various motifs are treated without relief, and the landscape is cut into successive planes, cubist-style. The powerful dramatic effect of these hectic compositions, and the subtle effects created by the wiping work done on the plates, place [this work] among O'Conor's strongest." (C. Boyle-Turner, in M. Grivel, ed., Gauguin et l'École de Pont-Aven, exhibition catalog, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, 1989, p. 112).
