Siege of MONTAUBAN. [Hector JOLY]. Histoire particuliere, des plus memorables choses qui se sont passees au Siege de Montauban: & de l'acheminement d'iceluy. Dressé en forme de journal. S.l.n.n., 1624. In-12 (16.5 x 10 cm), 192 pages; contemporary vellum binding (boards warped, accidents to endpapers with handwritten annotations: light wetness on a few leaves). Rare account of the siege of Montauban, which pitted the armies of Louis XIII against the Protestants of Montauban from August to November 1621, in the context of the Huguenot rebellions. Dedicated to Duke Henri II de Rohan, leader of the Protestant resistance, the text is said to have been composed by Hector Joly (c. 1575-?), professor and minister of religion in Montauban; it is also attributed to the magistrate Samuel de Bonencontre (1570-1643), quoted in the text; the dedication is signed "A.I.D.". It includes an interesting description of the town (pp. 29-41). This episode in the Huguenot wars was an important one for the Protestants, who succeeded in defeating the royal army despite being outnumbered; it was admired by contemporaries and led to numerous publications, including this one, which first appeared in 1622.
