Pierre, Passy lès Paris August 5 and December 19, 1858, about this acquisition project, for which he is "indebted above all to the good friendship of Mme Sand"...; and an autogr. note from Joseph Pierre (son of Jules). Sand the real estate agent! The letters concern a project to acquire the Chézeau-Gautier estate, near Baraize (Indre), by Lemoine-Montigny, director of the Théâtre du Gymnase, for which Sand is to act as intermediary. November 28, 1858. She receives a letter from Montigny "who may be leaving for Éguzon on Tuesday evening, but he cannot guarantee it. As his wife is ready to give him a third child, he would not want to leave her for anything in the world, if the fact were not accomplished. It's certain that by December 15 at the latest, you'll see him, with a good disposition to buy, as everything I've told him smiles on him. In any case, although we must expect discussions with a man who knows very well what he is doing, it is certain that he will bid for Mr David, and that he will pay cash, which is a great advantage in these times. So keep the talks going with the latter, until you have seen Mr Montigny, who is a bursar, but not Jewish. (This between us.) You see, Monsieur, with what confidence I speak to you, and how much I wish to procure for you the kind neighborliness you are so well made to appreciate"... [January 1, 1859]. Montigny tells him "that he will leave Paris on Tuesday evening and will be in Éguzon on Wednesday morning. I am still counting on your kindness to send for him. Mr Montigny will find it absolutely impossible to devote more than one day, that of Wednesday, to examining the Chezeau Gaultier property, so please do everything in your power, with all the good grace I know you can muster, to ensure that he sees everything that interests him, and that he gets the last word from the owner. Since this project, fifty others have presented themselves to the mind of our purchaser, for the reason that fifty very good offers have been presented to him for other acquisitions; he was anxious to please me by not making up his mind before seeing Ch. Gr, but if the business does not present itself immediately to him in an acceptable way, he will not be obstinate and will withdraw to stop elsewhere. Please do your utmost, in the interest of the owner himself, to ensure that a buyer of such serious wealth and probity does not pass him by. .... Attached are 2 l.a.s. from Lemoine-Montigny to J.
