Alphonse de LAMARTINE. Autograph poem signed, To Alix de Vignet, my niece..., Saint-Point October 24, 1836; 1 page in-4 (fold marks with small split).
A facsimile of the poem Les Oiseaux is included.

Beautiful poem from Recueillements poétiques (1839).
Here, it is entitled: À Alix de Vignet, ma nièce - qui me demandeait des vers pour elle seule, but will be entitled in the 1839 collection, of which it is the second piece: À une jeune fille qui pleurait sa mère. In 1849, Lamartine would turn it into the xxviith of his Nouvelles Méditations poétiques, in a corrected version and under the title: À Alix de V..., jeune fille qui avait perdu sa mère (To Alix de V..., a young girl who had lost her mother).
The manuscript, dated "St Point 24 octobre 1836", bears a dispatch at the bottom: "à Mme de Girardin". It consists of four quatrains, with a few variants from the published text.
"Que notre œil, l'un dans l'autre pose
Sad, when we look at each other!
Is there something missing
That we ask each other from the heart? [...]
But to see again all that we mourn
Pauvre enfant, on regarde au ciel!"
A facsimile of the poem Les Oiseaux is enclosed.
