Louis-Ange PITOU (1767-1846) chansonnier. L.A.S., Paris May 20, 1820, to Édouard Mounier, Directeur général de la Police et de la Librairie, ; 2 fol. pages (edges faded).

Rare and curious letter about the deathbed of the Duc de Berry. [Pitou published in the same year Le trône du martyr du 13 février 1820, oublié, demandé ensuite aux possesseurs, au bout d'un mois, par Monsieur, comte d'Artois (Duriez, 1820), and Véritable dernier coucher de Monseigneur le duc de Berry, le 13 février 1820; suivi d'événements importans, authentiques et inédits, communiqués par l'un des médecins appelés à donner ses soins à son Altesse Royale; et par Duriez, tapissier, qui a fourni le coucher du prince (Duriez, 1820).]
He sends her "unpublished facts and authentic pieces" on the death of the Duc de Berry: "I have gone to great expense to establish the monument set out in these two writings. S.A.R. madame la Duchesse de Berry, enlightened by these two works, had a gold tabatiere delivered to Mr Duriez on May 12 [...] and told us to pursue our claims". Pitou paid all the expenses "on condition that the bolster for the Prince's last bed would be ceded to me, which was done by Mr. Duriez [...] On March 20, the bed of Mr. Duc de Berry was requested from the owner by the secretary of the Chamber of Monsieur Comte d'Artois by order of this Prince: I was absent. M. Duriez reserved the bolster for me, but everything was taken away and no receipt was sent to us. To this day, we have claimed in vain, I for the bolster, M. Duriez for the rest of the bed. Our hearts were set on this monument to the House of Bourbon, but neither the King nor the Princes nor S.M.'s ministers will authorize the measure taken against us of keeping silent and having an intermediary offer us a price well below the outlay"...
