Gaston CHAISSAC. L.A.S. with collages, Sainte-Florence par L'Oie May 27, 1955, to Théodore Koenig in Brussels; 1 page in-4 (27 x 21 cm, 2 binder holes). Enclosed is an envelope decorated with collages sent by Chaissac to Théodore Koenig, [August 19, 1955] (address cancelled, binder holes). An astonishing letter written over a superb collage, made of torn and harmoniously glued scraps of paper of various colors. Théodore Koenig (192-1996), a Belgian poet also famous for his collages, founded the journal Phantômas, in which he published the present letter (no. 133-139, 1974, p. 89). He thanks him for sending his book, Le Jardin zoologique écrit en mer... He tells him of the latest events in the village: the Souriseau brothers in the fields, Bruno Masson and Michel Joyau doing "the water chore for the school canteen [...] Several of the above are a little "songe-malices" but so divinely decorative. With the arrival of summer, our reptile hunters - Michel Carcaud, etc. - have resumed their activity. He also reports on his finds: "I salvaged some antique candlesticks from garbage heaps, a slightly damaged plate decorated with limoges and an oriental leather cushion with decorative appliques, not a single fringe missing"... Enclosed is an envelope decorated with collages sent by Chaissac to Théodore Koenig, [August 19, 1955] (address cancelled, binder holes). Provenance: Théodore Koenig archives (Artcurial, May 3, 2007, no. 445).
