MARTINIE (Henri).
Livre d'Or de la Conférence de la Paix. Portraits, autographs, biographies, thoughts of plenipotentiary delegates, secretaries general, great leaders, collected by Henri Martinie.
Paris: Édition originale d'art, H. Martinie, 1921. - In-folio, embossed metal binding, decorated on the first plate with a frame and oak leaves in the center with a sword and two medallions with the dates 1914-1918, and on the second plate with a sunrise or sunset bearing the date 1920, in a double frame, smooth spine decorated with an olive leaf design, linings and endpapers of green and red-striped moiré evening (G. Perrin).

An extremely rare commemorative work, designed and published by art critic Henri Martinie (1881-1963), celebrating the Peace Conference held in 1919 and 1920 between the victorious Allies of the First World War, whose main outcome was the Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919 and promulgated on January 10, 1920.

This is probably a unique item, as there are no copies in public libraries or on the market. It consists of a title, a leaflet evoking the artists who contributed to the work, and 50 leaves featuring photographs of the French and foreign protagonists, the places where the various delegations were seated, the facsimile of 5 copies of the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles, and 3 plates reproducing drawings by Cass Papazian, Hepworth and Georges Scott.

There are a total of 35 Pigmenta charcoal photographs, including 28 portraits by photographer Isabey of Aristide Briand, René Viviani, Alexandre Millerand, Robert Lansing, Lord Robert Cécil, Ganga Singh, André Tardieu, Louis Loucheur, Silvio Crespi, Marquis Kimmochi Saionji, Paul Hymans, Ignace Paderewski, Octavio Rodrigo, Edouard Benes, Constantin Coanda, Elefthérios Venizélos, Nicolas Pachitch, Rustam Haidar, Prince Charoon, Jean-Antoine Buero, Norton de Mattos, Ferdinand Foch, Philippe Pétain, Hubert Lyautey, Émile Fayolle, Louis François Félix Marie Franhet d'Espèrey, Pierre-Alexis-Marie-Antoine Ronarch, and Jean Marie Joseph Degoutte.

In addition, there are photographs of the Hôtel Crillon (United States delegation), the Hôtel Majestic (British delegation), the Hôtel Edouard VII (Italian delegation), the Hôtel Bristol (Japanese delegation), the Hôtel Lotti (Belgian delegation), the Hôtel Plazza Athénée (United States delegation from Brazil), and the Hôtel Lutetia (Czech-Slovak delegation). One sheet includes a photograph of the treaty stack, and another reproduces a photograph of the Château de Versailles and the Hall of Mirrors.

Most of these photographs are framed by an engraving by an artist from the nation represented. These include the names of Adolphe Giraldon, Henri de Groux, Galanis, Severini, Yeremitch, etc., as well as Léonard FOUJITA, who produced two different frames, the first being repeated once.

All these leaves are followed by more than a hundred others. The set is bound in a repoussé metal binding signed G. Perrin.

This copy appears to have been left unfinished, as a preface by Louis Barthou is announced at the head, but does not appear.

Unbound copy. Scattered foxing and some soiling.
