*GROTIUS (Hugo).
Dissertationes De Studiis instituendis.
Amsterdam: Louis Elzevier, 1645. - In-12, 143 x 75 : (6 ff.), 687 pp. Dark blue morocco, double framed in gilt and cold-stamped fillets with gilt fleuron at corners, spine ribbed with gilt and cold-stamped motifs, interior gilt filleting, parchment endpapers, untrimmed, black half-maroquin slipcase (Simier R. du roi for binding and James Macdonald in New York for slipcase).

Willems 1028.

Edition published the same year as the one given by Louis Elzevier in Amsterdam, printed in the same city by Joan Blaeu. It has the same engraved title but a different pagination.

We repeat what Willems says about this book. It is "an interesting collection, comprising twenty-four dissertations on the best method to follow in the study of letters and sciences. Composed by judges as competent in the subject as the Grotius, the Naudé, the Erasmus, the Barlæus, the Campanella, &c., these dissertations contain many ingenious and practical views".

A precious copy with full margins, bound by Simier and of prestigious provenance. Primarily from the library of publisher and bibliophile Antoine-Augustin Renouard (1765-1853), for whom the binding is said to have been made. The presence of parchment endpapers is one of the clues to this provenance. It subsequently came into the possession of the great American bibliophile Mortimer Leo Schiff (1877-1931), who in turn had the slipcase made by the New York bookbinder James Macdonald (1859-1920), then of the English bibliophile John Hely-Hutchinson (1881-1955) and of Charles Van der Elst, president of the Société des bibliophiles et iconophiles de Belgique.

A perfectly preserved copy.
Provenance: Antoine-Augustin Renouard. - Mortimer Leo Schiff, with bookplate (cat. December 1938, no. 1597). - John Hely-Hutchinson, with bookplate (cat. 1956, no. 326). - Charles Van der Elst, with bookplate (cat. I, 1985, no. 99).
