Gabriel Eugène Coquelin (1907-1996) Woman styling her hair Model created in 1939 Black patina bronze proof Signed "G. COQUELIN" on the terrace, Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE PERDUE DELVAL" and is numbered "4/8". H. 109 cm Related literature : Monique Barrier, La saga des Coquelin, Paris, Éd. Damier, 2000, model no. 22, p. 188. This sensual figure of a woman doing her hair, dressed in a drape tied around her waist, is strongly inspired by the antique style so dear to the sculptors who were part of the Art Deco movement between the wars. Gabriel Coquelin trained in his father Eugène Coquelin's sculpture studio. He worked with numerous artists to create war memorials. In 1931, he took part in Alfred Janniot's bas-reliefs for the façade of the former Musée des Colonies. Gabriel Coquelin is passionate about the intimate representation of the female nude, which he models spontaneously using clay applied in small strokes. Here, the sculptor takes up the attitude and drape of his statuette La France, created in 1935, then for the bronze Eva.
