Kubacha" dish with figures, Safavid Iran, Dagestan, 17th century Large siliceous ceramic dish with transparent-glazed cobalt blue and white decoration of two figures wearing long-sleeved coats and headgear, following each other in a landscape, with flower-decorated lambrequins radiating from the base and marli. Diameter: 33.7 cm A few chips around the edges, three suspension holes. The Chinese inspiration of this dish, painted in the classic blue and white palette, is pushed to the extreme here with its original iconography. The two central figures, dressed in long-sleeved, double-breasted coats and wearing large headdresses, appear to be representations of Chinese, as can sometimes be seen on Persian ceramics of this period. Another example with two figures in long coats appeared on a Safavid vase from the Simon Digby collection dispersed at Christie's London South Kensington on April 8, 2011 (lot 134). Another possible interpretation would be the representation of two priests from the Nestorian religious community present in Iran at the time.
