Seljuk ceramic shard, Iran, 12th-13th century
Glazed siliceous ceramic. One ewer body with calligraphic decoration molded around the neck, all covered with a turquoise glaze, H. 16 cm, broken-glued, missing; one pitcher reconstituted from shards, globular shape with straight lip and annular handle with flat liner, painted in black with millefiori flowers on the body, pseudo-calligraphy on the lip, under transparent colorless and cobalt-blue glaze. H. 12 cm; one pitcher base and three shards with black champlevé engobe silhouette decoration under transparent turquoise glaze, H. pitcher base: 7.5 cm; three anthropomorphic and aviforme decorations molded in turquoise glaze, one character bust with polychrome painted decoration, H. 4-5 cm

The millefiori decoration on the pitcher is unusual in Seljuk production, and its delicacy and finesse make it highly likely to be the work of the Kashan workshops. It is found inside a bowl in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, attributed to the early 13th century (10.9).
