*A very beautiful sculpture, a fragment of an ancient chief's staff. It is known that the famous Byeri sculptures, guardians of reliquaries, were never traditionally carved in ebony, but that they were almost systematically carved in ebony for the chiefs' staffs. This sculpture, small in size, bears witness to the great ancient Fang art of the okaks of the Rio Muni through its volumes that combine power, minimalism and radicalism in the treatment of the bust, but especially the spherical head with its bone-encrusted eyes and aggressive mouth.
