James-J.-J. Tissot (1836-1902)
Mediunimic appearance. 1885. Black Manner. 345 x 492. Wentworth 76. Superb proof on strong simili-japan, of the 1st state (of 2), before the letter. Traces of folds along the lower edge of the sheet. All margins.

"Tissot practiced etching in the black manner between 1883 and 1886 essentially, with a real talent and in the large format. Interestingly, it was on his return to France that he used this technique, which was popular in England, to represent Kathleen Newton, his recently deceased companion. Kathleen emerges here from the deep blacks in the company of the medium William Eglinton. The work is a translation of a painting Tissot kept for the rest of his life." (James Tissot (1836-1902), the Modern Ambiguity Exhibition, Paris, Musée d'Orsay, 2020).
