A.-P. Martial (Adolphe-Martial Potémont) (1827-1883)
Old Paris, 300 leaves. 1866. An album in-fol. [335 x 490] containing the complete suite of 300 subjects. Etching. Very nice proofs on chine applied on strong white vellum. Slight dusting to the edges of the leaves, with some very rare tears. All margins untrimmed. Red cardboard portfolio with ribbons of the edition with engraved title-piece glued on the top cover (slightly faded). Very rare complete.

The engraved introductory note pasted on the upper cover indicates: "The first of these etchings was made in 1843, the last in 1866 - except for some old drawings - they give an idea of the state of Paris a little before and during this period. As for the famous addresses and the names and dates that serve as titles in this work for each of the twelve districts that have disappeared, they are notes that I had to take in order to know what the city contained that was curious. They complete a work which without this addition would only recall streets and constructions demolished since about fifty years. AP Martial December 1866". "... Martial found a subject that inspired him, as it seduced others in this second half of the 19th century. "Paris has tempted many artists. If Meryon was the greatest, other engravers deserve not to be forgotten, like Martial, Delauney, Lalanne", says Delteil in his Manuel de l'amateur d'estampes. Paris, which was being transformed under the rule of Baron Haussmann, provided a subject for reflection for artists. Some emphasized the novelties. Others, like Martial, turn to the past, do not want to forget. Martial wants to show what has been demolished, "what the city contained of curious". A picturesque Paris, anecdotal, vibrant with history(s)." (Monique Moulène, "L'Ancien Paris de Martial Potémont", Blog Gallica, BnF).
