Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) Eve. 1898-1899. Woodcut. 215 x 283 [239 x 295]. Mongan, Kornfeld, Joachim 42 II a. Interesting trial proof on modest ivory vellum, the subject pale and weakened in places, the small animal on the left ill-defined. Verso: another proof of the same subject, very weak. Light foxing and small russet spots. Fine oblique surface scratch to the left of Eve's right hand. Horizontal median fold at 43 mm from the lower edge, with a tiny lack at the right edge. Provenance: Georges-Daniel de Monfreid (1856-1929), friend of the artist. This print is close to another trial print listed in the catalog raisonné, also bearing on the reverse another very pale print of the same subject, from the Agnès Huc de Monfreid collection in Corneilla-de-Conflent (Pyrénées-Orientales). (E. Mongan, E. W. Kornfeld, H. Joachim, Paul Gauguin, Catalogue raisonné of his Prints, Bern, Kornfeld Publishers, 1988, p. 168, n° 42 II a). It should be noted that the print referenced by these authors is on a large sheet of paper and has a print of our earlier subject, Woman Gathering Fruit and Oviri at the foot - evidence that the two subjects were printed at the same time.
