Pietro Testa (1611-1650)
The Three Virtues, Faith, Hope and Charity. 1637. Etching. 305 x 410. Bartsch 30. Very nice proof on 18th century laid paper (watermark: Auvergne). Slight traces of folds rubbed in the tablet. A circular freckle above the central putti at the foot. Small margins.

"This piece is one of the rarest of Testa's work." (Bartsch). It is an allegory on the appointment of Cardinal Franciotti to the rank of bishop of Lucca, where we see the seven virtues accompanied by a griffin.
