Albrecht Altdorfer (1480-1538)
The Great Crucifixion. About 1515-1518. Burin. 96 x 143. Bartsch 8; New Hollstein 9. A very fine and brilliant proof on thin laid paper, trimmed to the subject, carefully washed. Ex-coll. F. Somary (Lugt 4384).

"Among the burins engraved by Altdorfer [this print stands out] by its larger size, but also by the originality of [its] invention and the quality of [its] execution. [It shows] the renewed attention with which Altdorfer, in the mid-1510s, studied Dürer's burins, was inspired by their compositions, and embraced their technical sophistication-varying the length and orientation of the fine cuts that saturate the space." Note the "pronounced foreshortening of Christ's body" and "intense flashes of light that stand out against a dark sky, creating an almost supernatural flickering effect." (H. Grollemund, ed., Albrecht Altdorfer, maître de la Renaissance allemande, Paris, Musée du Louvre and ed. Liénart, 2020, p. 150).
