17th century FLEMISH school, follower of Martin de Vos
Saint Guénolé in nocturnal adoration
Canvas
32,5 x 42,5 cm
(Small missing parts)

From a noble Welsh family, Saint Guenolé (Vinvalocius or Winwallus), spent twenty years traveling through Ireland in the footsteps of Saint Patrick before founding, at the end of the 5th century, the abbey of Landevennec, in the Morbihan. The first building remains the oldest monastic foundation we know of in Brittany where the abbey played a considerable cultural role. Legend has it that Guénolé lived on rye bread and ashes, water and prayers, slept on sand or tree bark, and performed many miracles. Several churches in Cornwall, including Anglican parishes, are dedicated to him.
