William Blair BRUCE (1859-1906) Sunset on the Sea, 1905 Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and dedicated "to his friend A. Hustin" lower right. Annotated "19 hours June evening - North Baltic Sea. Sweden" on the lower left. 35 x 27 cm William Blair Bruce painted our picture a year before his death. This Canadian painter arrived in France in 1881 where he enrolled at the Académie Julian. In 1885, he met Caroline Benedicks, a Swedish sculptor, whom he married a few years later. They both settled in Grez-sur-Loing and then left to live on the Swedish island of Gotland from 1900. It is from there that he painted this sunset on the Baltic Sea.
