Charles GARNIER (1825-1898). L.A.S. "Carlos", Bordighera March 18, 1885, to a friend; 4 pages in-8, at his address Villa Charles Garnier, Bordighera.

His friend complaining about his bad handwriting, Charles Garnier sends him a letter (supposedly written by his gardener) with different calligraphies. He cannot be in Paris for the election of the free member of the Academy of Fine Arts, but he sees "only two candidates really worthy of the nomination: Rothschild and Heuzey; one by his situation [...], the other by his talent and the services he would render to the dictionary. The others are, in short, failures, good people, it is true" [It is the archaeologist Heuzey who will be elected]. It is also necessary to win "the presidency of Bouguereau for the Taylor Society; I see in the newspapers that he is in competition with Roger Ballu! It can't be! It is really an indignity if the unpleasant and impotent Roger wins over Bouguereau who, in spite of the jokes made about him, is a man of great talent and great character" [Bouguereau will be president from 1885 to 1905].

2 L.A.S. to the same, on the letterhead of the Travaux du Nouvel Opéra, one fixing an appointment, signed "Carlos", and the other from Bordighera 22 f. 1880.
