Mark Matveevitch ANTOKOLSKY (1842-1902) Nestor the chronicler, 1890 Bronze with brown patina. Signed on the right side of the base. A label on the front of the base gives on three lines the French title of the work "L'écrivain public" with the name of the sculptor "ANTOCOLSKY" and that of the founder "F. Barbedienne fondeur". Height : 60 cm ; base : 38 x 42 cm Mr. Antokolsky worked on the marble statue of Nestor the Chronicler from 1886 to 1890 in Paris. Upon its completion, the work was purchased by Alexander III and is now in the Russian Museum. Antokolsky had his works published in reduction by the Parisian founders in limited editions. This statue was cast in the 1890s by Ferdinand Barbedienne, the best art bronze caster in Paris, with the active participation of Antokolsky. The original in marble is 161 cm high. The difference between the French and Russian titles is probably due to the fact that the name Nestor is deeply rooted in Russian culture and largely unknown in France. [Russian art]
