Indian ink painting of a nobleman in a wheeled palanquin, anonymous, probably Korea, 19th century
Ink (sumi e) on paper with a lively scene of a figure on horseback in the foreground reaching out to the foaming waters while a nobleman sticks his head out of his horse-drawn wheeled palanquin to observe what his escort is showing him. At the back of the palanquin are piled up scrolls of paintings, books, and luggage. Inside the vehicle, one can see an imposing travel seat. No signature or seal.
Framed under glass.
Size at sight : 69 x 31 cm

Unfortunately, there are few clues in this painting that reveal its geographical origin and even less its author. The costumes, and especially the knotted trimmings on the palanquin, would suggest a Korean origin. Indeed, these garlands of thread decorated with sophisticated knots are particularly common on palanquins of Korean origin.
