Foujita arrived in Paris in 1913 and very quickly met Picasso. It was in the studio of the inventor of cubism that he discovered the work of the Douanier Rousseau. Foujita was fascinated. The influence of the naive painter can be felt in his works as in our vase of flowers, made in 1917. That same year, the Chéron gallery, rue de la Boétie organized his first personal exhibition of 110 watercolors, in which our work would probably have appeared.
