Our painting was done during Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret's first stay in Algeria, between 1887 and 1888. The catalog of Dagnan-Bouveret's works mentions studies made in 1887 in the Kasbah of Algiers, of which our work could be a part. His friend, the painter Jules-Alexis Muenier (1863-1942), who accompanied him on his trip, painted a picture framed on this same terrace, under the title Femmes d'Alger, which was exhibited at the 1889 Salon.
