Victoria DUBOURG (Madame Henri FANTIN-LATOUR) (Paris, 1840 - Buré, 1926)
Pansies in a Pot
Original canvas
Monogrammed lower right with the tip of the brush: "V.D".
21 x 26,8 cm

Victoria Dubourg spent part of her childhood in Frankfurt. Back in Paris, she was trained by Fanny Chéron who opened a studio for young girls. She met Édouard Manet in the early 1860s. Edgar Degas painted her portrait around 1868-1869 (Toledo, Museum of Art). In 1865, she obtained a copyist's card at the Louvre. There she met Henri Fantin-Latour whom she married in 1876. In 1866, thanks to the recommendation of Gustave Chaix d'Est-Ange, vice-president of the Conseil d'État and president of the Public Works and Fine Arts section, our artist was commissioned to copy The Virgin, the Child Jesus, and Saint Martine by Peter of Cortona for the church of Habloville and, later, the Pilgrims of Emmaus by Titian for the church of Servon. Dubourg exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1868, Nature morte; le pot au feu. Still life was to become her specialty even though in 1869 she exhibited a Portrait of Mlle S. B. After Fantin-Latour's death in 1904, she organized an important retrospective and devoted several years to the elaboration of a catalog raisonné to the detriment of her own work.
