Along with Paul Desgoffe, Paul Flandrin was one of the few students of Ingres to specialize in landscape painting.
During his stay in Rome from 1834 to 1838, where he followed his brother Hippolyte to the Villa Medici, he adopted the rules of classical historical landscape painting dictated by Nicolas Poussin and Pierre-Henri Valenciennes. On his return to France, he painted views and memories of Italy in this tradition, but the company of his friends Corot and Ravier, and then after 1847 that of Harpignies and Daubigny, allowed him to soften his technique.
Flandrin liked to call Idylle a large number of his pastoral landscapes exhibited at the Salon from 1869 on. Two preparatory drawings (in private collections) of the trumpeter's figure show variations with our painting. For the musician, Flandrin retains the attitude set up in the sheet of August 12 (private collection) whose model is called Michele Fusco.
