Émile Loubon followed the classes of Jean-Antoine Constantin, Granet's master. In 1829, he took advantage of a leave of absence to see Rome again and proposed that the young man accompany him. Back in France two years later, Loubon settled in Paris where he became friends with Delacroix and Couture. He frequented the landscape painters of the Barbizon School such as Corot, Rousseau and Diaz. In 1845, the artist accepted the direction of the free school of drawing in Marseille as well as that of the museum. Back in his native Provence, Loubon became a champion of his region, as our painting shows.
