Alexandre-Hyacinthe DUNOUY (Paris, 1757 - Jouy-sur-Lionne, 1841)
View of Rouen, taken from Canteleu
Paper mounted on canvas
31 x 49,5 cm

If Dunouy stayed many times in Rouen, where he was received by the Arnaud-Tizon family, Pierre Vitet's in-laws, "the best of friends", this country scene is one of the rare views of the surroundings of the Norman city that we know of. Dunouy speaks of "the happy colony of Bapeaume" of which our painting restores the framework. Probably painted on the spot between 1795 and 1810, it adopts a singular point of view, taken from the commune of Bapeaume, at the foot of the hill of Canteleu, which dominates the state forest and along the road to Maromme which runs alongside the Clairette.
Dunouy used to entrust the execution of the figures to specialized colleagues but the author of the animals represented here could be Vitet, who was studying the landscape in his company as the booklet of the Salon of 1810 testifies.
