Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy (Paris, 1757 - Jouy-en-Josas, 1841) Presumed view of the Montalets Paper mounted on canvas 31.4 x 24.1 cm (new stretcher: 31.7 x 24.6 cm) In 1795, Chateaubriand said in his Letter on the art of landscape: "The painter who represents human nature must be concerned with the study of passions: if we know the heart of man, we will know his face poorly. The landscape has its moral and intellectual part like the portrait; it is necessary that one speaks also, and that through the material execution one feels, or the dreams or the feelings, which the various sites make raise. It is not indifferent to paint in a landscape, for example, oaks or willows, the long-lived oaks: durando saecula vincit, with rough bark, vigorous arms, haughty head: immota manet, inspire under their shadows feelings of a completely different kind than these willows with light foliage, which live little and which have the freshness of the waves from which they draw their sap: umbrae irrigui fontis amica salix. It is that the landscape must be drawn on the naked". Dunouy seems to have followed the recommendations of his illustrious neighbor in Aulnay, thus responding to the concerns of the Romantics.
