René de Saint Marceaux was a native of Rheims and regularly visited the city and participated in the exhibitions of the Société des Amis des Arts. He painted portraits of his friends, including that of the doctor Samuel Pozzi in 1900, which he exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts a year later. In 1905, Samuel Pozzi, who had become mayor of the city of Reims, inaugurated the bronze sculpture La Vigne. This allegory of the region so cherished by the sculptor, commissioned from René de Saint Marceaux in 1880, was kept in the Reims Museum of Fine Arts before its installation in the courtyard of the City Hall.
