Thomas Mahy, marquis de FAVRAS (1744-1790) agent of the count of Provence (the future Louis XVIII), he was involved in a conspiracy in 1790 and died without giving the name of his leader. L.A.S., prison of the Abbey January 7, 1790, to "Messieurs"; 1 page in-4.
Beautiful and rare letter from prison.
He is distressed by the precautionary reinforcements around him and wonders about the cause: "It is an illusion, it is a dream for me, that all that happens to me by the fatality of inductions, doubtless plausible in your eyes, which, by deceiving your judgment, make my adversity and that of an adorable wife. He is told that his case has been sent to the Châtelet: "Is it you, is it him that I must implore to obtain the beginning of the procedure? To exonerate myself in the eyes of the Nation, in the eyes of the Universe will be for me a new existence, pay attention, I pray you, that each day imprints more deeply the character of the unspeakable crimes which were imputed to me by the libellists; [...] to prolong the term so desired by me of my justification would be to confirm in a way the general opinion which you surely have as much at heart as I to see disproved "...
[Arrested on December 25, 1789, he was condemned by the Tribunal du Châtelet and hanged on February 18, 1790].
Two printed documents are joined: Judgment in last resort which condemns to death Thomas Mahy de FAVRAS (Paris 1790) and Act of Faith of Mrs de Favras, 4 pages in-8.
