Raymond POINCARÉ (1860-1934) politician, President of the Republic. 14 L.A.S., Paris and Sampigny 1907-1933, to Édouard Herriot; 21 pages in-8, mostly on the letterhead of the Presidency of the Republic, Presidency of the Council or Senate, one envelope. Interesting political correspondence. June 7, 1907, thanking Herriot for his confidence...April 24, 1914, about the delicate problem of having his wife accompany him on his provincial tours: April 22, 1922, explanations on the clarification that he had published, following the turmoil in the cabinet, concerning the sending of a French politician to the Soviets; "I limited myself to saying, which was the strict truth, that no politician had asked me for a mission in Russia and that none had received one. This note, in my mind, was far from being aimed at you; it simply denied the existence of a mission", and was "only intended to deny that the government had the intention of having negotiations with the Soviets"; the drafting must have been too clumsy... August 27, 1927, on the project of decorating at the same time Frédéric Lefèvre and Maurice Martin du Gard, editor and director of the Nouvelles littéraires, "by far the most important literary journal"... January 11, 1928, thanks for the beautiful speech on Zola... March 3, reticence on the appropriateness of responding to the "retrospective criticisms" of which Herriot was "too often the object"; Poincaré recommended some modifications to the Herriot communiqué... October 11: Articles 70 and 71 inserted into the finance law at the request of the Minister of Foreign Affairs did not "in any way infringe on the principles of secularism"... November 11, the day after Herriot's resignation from the Ministry of Public Instruction, the President of the Council regretted "a collaboration that had been so pleasant to me and which had been so useful for the country"... June 30, 1933, thanking for the letter-preface of Herriot to the work of Georges Samué on Poincaré... Other letters about protégés, academic affairs, various publications, etc. A L.S. from Émile Roche, from the newspaper La République, about Poincaré is attached (1938).
