NOBLESSE. Manuscript, Mémoire des présidents a mortier contre les ducs et pairs à Mgr le duc d'Orléans Regent, April 1716; 10 1/2 pages in-fol. Memorandum addressed to the Regent duke of Orleans against certain peers and dukes, who claim a place in the Parliament in the arcanes of power thanks to a genealogy that is often false, or at least embellished: "there are a great number of houses in the Parliament that are very much above most of the peers, so we do not believe we have to add faith to their fabulous genealogies. They draw up a summary but faithful list of the true history of these houses, stemming from commoner families, at best bourgeois; of these dukes descending from bastards, sometimes from the clergy; of these families knew how to rise so high thanks to fortunes acquired by alliances as interested as profitable, without report with the true nobility: Dukes of Uzes, La Tremouille, Sully, Monfort, Brissac, Richelieu, Saint-Simon (fortune "so recent that everyone is aware of it, there has never been so slim a nobility"), La Rochefoucauld, Noailles, Humières, Harcourt ("the Duke of Harcourt comes from a bastard of a bishop of Bayeux"), the Duke of Antin, etc. Attached is a printed document, Déclaration du Roy (12 May 1716); and a handwritten memoir of Tres humbles et tres respectueuses remontrances (26 July 1718, 33 p.).
