[HENRI IV]. Manuscript, Histoire des Amours du grand Alcandre, 17th century; 72 pages in-4, antique vellum replacement boards (the slightly larger leaves have been folded at the edges). Histoire des aventures amoureuses du Vert Galant, variously attributed to Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine, princesse de Conti, and to Roger II de Saint-Lary, duc de Bellegarde (the edition indicates by M.L.P.D.C.). The first edition would have appeared in Paris in 1651 at the widow of Jean Guillemot; the text is taken again in a Collection of various parts, useful to the history of Henry III, King of France and Poland (Cologne, Pierre du Marteau, 1660; see L. Janmart de Brouillant, Histoire de Pierre du Marteau, Paris, 1888). This manuscript, like the book, gives at the end of the account a "Clef ou explication des noms propres desguisez dans l'Histoire des Amours d'Alcandre" (Key or explanation of proper names used in the History of the Loves of Alcandre), which opens with the name of the protagonist: "Alcandre. Henry de Bourbon roy of France fourth of the name, and of Navarre"... "Olimpe" is Marie de Médicaine, the king of France. Olimpe" is Marie de Medici, "Melisse" Marguerite de France, "Filisel" the Duke of Chevreuse, etc. The places are similarly given under pseudonym: "Vigenne" for Guyenne, the "Mont de Mars" for Montmartre, "Carnutes" for Chartres, etc.
