Horace VAN OFFEL (1876-1944). 4 L.A.S. with drawings, Brussels 1923-1931 and n.d., to Frédéric Lefèvre, of the Nouvelles littéraires; 8 pages in-8 and in-4, one envelope.
Illustrated correspondence of the Belgian writer.
18 November 1923. "He has 1° corrected his proofs, 2° written two Excelsior tales, 3° three articles Carillon Ostende 4° half a dozen articles and letters for Ma Vie [...] The manuscript of the Two Ingenus is for you"; he draws himself working feverishly at his table.
[Early 1925?] His stomach is "burned by the wine and aperitifs of Christmas and New Year's Day. How did Verlaine get drunk every day and not die immediately! He is sorry not to have any article on the Two Ingenus and draws himself in bed as a "gastralgic poet".
He makes the article "neat" on Verhaeren: "I hope that Mrs. Verhaeren will be very happy"; 3 drawings of which a self-portrait.
Brussels January 11, 1931. With humor ("should I come and spend an hour with you with a sword in my fist?") he asks him "to talk about my last two books, The Sword Juggler [...] and The Spell of Memories" in the Nouvelles littéraires; this would allow him to obtain "certain advantages from the Belgian government"; 2 drawings: self-portrait as a musketeer, with a sword in his fist, threatening Lefèvre, seated at his desk.
