Marcel PAGNOL (1895-1974). Autograph manuscript, Hamlet. Preface, [1947]; 17 pages small in-4 in a brown-covered school notebook.
Preface for Hamlet for his translation of Shakespeare's play (1947).
The notebook, on the cover of which other titles are noted, contains the text entitled La Folie d'Hamlet (fragments, some passages crossed out with a red line). "Is he mad? Is he not mad? [...] Hamlet simulates madness. Like all malingerers, he has a good reason to play this comedy: his life is in danger. On the other hand, like all pretenders, he pushes the comedy to the end, i.e. he overdoes it". Pagnol also considers Hamlet's homosexuality. On the reverse side of the pages, we find the outline of a play entitled L'Idiot du Village (The Village Idiot), a few notes on mechanics, and two verses for the translation of Les Bucoliques.
