Charles-Jean-François HÉNAULT (1685-1770) president of the Parliament of Paris, historian. Manuscript, Extracts and reflections; a large volume in-8 of 421 pages (the rest blank), bound in green vellum, smooth spine decorated with fleurons with title-piece. Manuscript from the library of President Hénault. It bears in subtitle : Extraits des additions qui n'ont pas été inserées dans la dere édition du Nouvel Abr. chr. This is a well-ordered manuscript, written in a beautiful hand, gathering important factual, anecdotal or analytical additions, in the tasty and often digressive style of the Nouvel Abrégé chronologique de l'histoire de France, a remarkable work that was reedited and enlarged many times during the author's lifetime, and continued under the Restoration by C.A. Walckenaer. The entries in this volume, as in the Nouvel Abrégé, are classified by year, from about 511 to 1707; the historian often refers to the pagination of his last edition for "particular remarks. Let us quote two entries: [1689] "Mde de Maintenon had the tragedy of Esther composed by Racine, who no longer worked for the theater, performed at St Cyr, before the King. There were characters that could be applied. The most serious men of the court attended. "Death of Made la Dauphine on April 20, 1690. This Princess showed great firmness. She asked for her children, and convinced that her last bed had contributed to her death, she said to M. le Duc de Berri while embracing him, my son, you cost me my life. I will say one more word about this princess of whom I have already spoken, she was an enemy of slander and especially of mockery, to the point that she could not bear nor understand the mockery and malignity of the court stile: But Madame la Dauphine de Savoye, who had come to France as a child, and who was more inclined to our French manners, did not like this kind of language any better. She said with spite to Made de Maintenon that by friendship she called my aunt, my aunt one mocks all here "... Beautiful engraved bookplate Le Pdent Hénault of the Académie françoise. A L.A.S. from Mme de Mornay to President Hénault, October 26, 1765 is enclosed.
