Unique sought-after edition of an alphabet book drawn and engraved by David Monnier. Title and nine plates of three initials each with two illustrated occurrences (no W and only one plate for the Z decorated with six occurrences). Various illustrations of animals, characters and objects, finely engraved, under the three capital initials placed at the head of the engraving. All plates (except the title) are signed Dd Monnier. Between the plates, are interspersed pages of reading exercises defining the engravings. The work begins with alphabets of allegorical letters and various characters, numbers, vowels, consonants, double letters, syllables and syllabic words. Rare work. Freckles, most pronounced on the engraved title and four of the plates. Missing embossed frame on the first plate.
