DUFRENOY (Mrs Adélaïde-Gillette, born Billet). Primer for the little gourmets. This work is decorated with twenty-six lithographed engravings after the drawings of Mr. Devilly and Mr. Leloi, painters at the royal porcelain factory. Lefuel, Bookseller, rue Saint-Jacques, N° 54. Nöel et Cie, Palais-Royal. Paris. [On the title page]. Nöel et Dauty, Palais-Royal. Lefuel, rue Saint-Jacques, N° 54. [On the engraved title]. [1822]. Printed by J. Didot, the Elder. Small in-8 (18,8 x 12 cm). 1 engraved title, vij, 109, (2) pp. 26 engraved plates : ivy green half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and roulette, burgundy morocco title-piece (Modern binding). Remarkable primer. First edition and first printing of the illustrations. Twenty-six historiettes written by the novelist and woman poet Adélaïde-Gillette Dufrénoy (1765-1825), most often named after a delicacy, but with a moralizing content. A title engraved by Engelmann and twenty-six charming engravings in the form of an alphabet (no W but a final Etcetera added). All engravings follow a unique layout: the black illustration is contained in a circle with, at the head, the initial decorated with fleurons, at the foot, the legend referring to the story and, all, in a straight frame of foliage and ornaments in the corners. The engravings are signed by the draftsman and painter Jean-Charles Develly (1783-1862) [and not Devilly as indicated on the title] and lithographed by C. Constans at Sèvres or Godefroy Engelmann. Faint foxing on seven of the plates and more sustained on the D of Darioles and the N of Nigauds. A young Félicie, 6 years old, had, at the time, some difficulties with her pen to write her name on the reverse of the title page.
