DAUMIER, GAVARNI, JOHANNOT et al.
The Great Alphabet in action.
Drawings by MM. Daumier, Gavarni, Johannot and other artists. From Aubert et Cie, publishers of the Musée Philipon, the Lanterne magique, the Folies caricaturales and the beautiful journal les Modes parisiennes. Place de la Bourse, 29, Paris. [1844]. Printed by Béthune and Plon, rue de Vaugirard, 36, Paris. In-4 (28,2 x 22 cm). 96 pp. Publisher's red-grained cardboard boards, gilt-stamped title, in an ornate frame, on the first cover.

First edition. The publisher Aubert uses the drawings of famous artists that he publishes in other works and, in this one, to create a beautiful, often caricatured and comic alphabet book.
Beginning with a plate of alphabets, a syllabary, and numbers, it continues with fifty-nine pages of illustrated initials with nearly ten engraved vignettes per page, as well as compositions captioned with their names to spell. After the alphabet book, following the same pattern, pages of small engravings include a text to be spelled, then read. As the pages go by, the number of illustrations decreases and the difficulty of the text increases. Illustrated fables of La Fontaine finish the album.
In its red percaline cardboard with gilt decoration.
Pale scattered freckles mainly on the last booklet and minor restoration on the corners of the binding.
