Antoine WATTEAU (Valenciennes 1684 - Nogent-sur-Marne 1721) Two heads of an old man, after Rubens Burnt sanguine. (Glued in full on an old 18th century mount, slightly insolated). 13,5 x 19 cm Bibliography: Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat, Antoine Watteau 1684 - 1721, Catalogue raisonné des dessins, Milan, Edition Leonardo Arte, 1996, volume I, no. 240 bis, p. 384, reproduced. Our drawing is a copy of two works by Rubens: the Saint Thomas in the Prado (inv. 1654) and the head of an old man in the Kunsthistorisches Muséum in Vienna (inv. 522). They would have been made through the so-called "Piles-Crozat" album, which contained 94 drawings of heads made by an artist in Rubens' workshop after the works of his master. Rosenberg and Prat place the date of the drawing around 1714.
