PHILIPON'S MUSEUM OR COMIC STORE followed by LANTERNE MAGIQUE 1842 : 48 issues. Paris, Chez Aubert et Cie. Texts by P. Borel, Cham, Louis Huart, Lorentz, Charles Philipon, etc. Illustrations by Cham, Daumier, Eustache, Forest, Gavarni, Grandville, Eugène Lami, Provost-Dumarchais, Ch. Vernier, etc. Complete collection. 48 issues in 1 vol. in-folio bound (cover in poor condition, 1st cover detached). The first 24 issues form T. I and are paginated from 1 to 192. The 25th to 30th issues that begin T. II are paginated from 1 to 48, then the 31st issue continues the pagination of T. I by adding the 48 previous pages. This change in pagination caused the binder to make a mistake: the 25th to 30th issues are thus bound at the beginning of the volume (but the copy is quite complete). Charles Philipon's Musée ou magasin comique was supposed to have 100 issues, but at the 48th issue a notice announces the end of the publication, hoping that the subscribers will continue the favor they honored the Magasin comique and La Lanterne magique, album published by the same publishers and drawn by the artists of the Musée. The present copy includes this album La Lanterne magique which is complete with 72 lithographed plates by Adam, Cham, Dallet, C. Doussault, J. Platier, Quillenbois, Ch. Vernier, etc. One rarely encounters the set Museum and Lantern. Handwritten notes of Vasseur (1 f.). Joint: - 1 portrait charge of Charles Philipon, original lithography of Benjamin Roubaud, extracted from Panthéon charivarique; - 1 L.A.S. of Charles Philipon, dated Ste Pélagie January 23, 1832, addressed to Jacques Coste; - 1 portrait of Charles Philipon extracted from L'Artiste (April 1862).
