THE CENSOR
Or Examination of the acts and works which tend to destroy or to consolidate the constitution of the State
June 1814-6 September 1815. In Paris, at Madame Marchant's. Written by Messrs. Comte and Dunoyer, lawyers. Volume 3 includes an important article by Saint-Simon ("Lettre sur l'établissement du parti de l'opposition"). 6 vol. in-8 bound in period (half green morocco, spine decorated, motifs composed of fleurons with diamonds and garlands). The 1st page of n° 2 is partly torn. It seems that 4 pages of the Bulletin du Censeur are missing between issues 2 and 4, which would be paginated from 9 to 12. Pages 29 and 30 of the Bulletin du Censeur are partly torn. To be complete, 7 volumes are needed, but the 7th volume that was seized is almost impossible to find. Handwritten notes of Vasseur (1 f.). The review was resumed in 1817 under the title " Le Censeur européen " :
LE CENSEUR EUROPÉEN
Or Examen de diverses questions de droit public, et des divers ouvrages littéraires et scientifiques, considérés dans leurs rapports avec les progrès de la civilisation
February 1817-1818. In Paris, at the office of the administration. Written by Messrs. Comte and Dunoyer. 6 vol. in-8 bound in period (full green cardboard, labels on the spine, green and red with gold fillet frames; boards slightly rubbed). To be complete, 12 volumes are needed (February 1817-April 1819). Handwritten notes by Vasseur (2 ff.). Joint: - Issue of the Revue des Sciences humaines devoted to the Censeur européen (n° 114, April-June 1964).
The only truly independent journal of the time. It first appeared by deliveries of 2 or 3 sheets; after the law of October 21, in order to escape censorship, it appeared only at indeterminate times, by deliveries of 20 sheets. The 7th volume, retained for a long time under the seals, is hardly found. Resumed in February 1817, under the title "Le Censeur européen". Resumed a third time two months later, when the freedom had been given back to the existing newspapers, and the right to create new ones to everyone; it then took the large format, and became daily under the simplified title of "Le Censeur Européen" (June 15, 1819-June 22, 1820, 372 issues in 2 series). It ceased with the re-establishment of the censorship in 1820, and was joined to the Courrier Français. (Hatin, pp. 317-318).
